Choosing a BMW X Series
Table of Contents

The BMW X series includes crossovers of the prominent Bavarian brand. Based on the reviews collected by our Indianapolis car shops' experts, the first representative of the X Series was released in 1994 when the German manufacturer Bavarian Motor Works bought the famous Land Rover brand from British Aerospace. On its basis, the BMW X5 with the body code designation E53 was created. Later, the lineup expanded significantly. The German crossovers, initially criticized by the Americans for their insufficiently high off-road qualities, gained worldwide popularity. Let's talk about the features of these cars and how to choose a BMW X series according to your preferences.
BMW X1: balanced compact crossover

The BMW X1 compact crossover features relatively small dimensions and can boast balanced proportions and impressive maneuverability. The car is available in three trim options:
- xLine;
- Sport Line;
- M Sport.
When choosing a used BMW, you can place focus on respectability or a sporty character and the interior space. BMW X1 is inexpensive compared to other X-line models, is well suited for city use and occasional trips on dirt roads, and, if necessary, can handle light off-road conditions. The crossover is available with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 313 hp or 241 hp. The first option has higher dynamic and speed qualities, and the second is distinguished by its economy.
BMW X2: dynamic BMW for high-speed driving

The BMW X2 is the emphatically sporty model on a front-wheel-drive platform designed for city streets and super highways. The car has a unique appearance, good dynamic and speed characteristics, and first-class communication capabilities. The BMW X2 is the first Bavarian brand model to receive the M Sport X package.
The car will suit those who value high-speed crossovers with an individual look and are not going to use the car for off-road driving.
BMW X3: universal mid-size crossover

The comfortable universal BMW X3 is a typical representative of the mid-size crossover class. This car is suitable for both daily city use and long-distance trips of 3-4 people. The BMW X3 is also good in light off-road conditions, but it is better not to test the crossover on soggy soil, especially on loam.
BMW X4: stylish mid-size cross-coupe

The mid-size BMW X4 cross-coupe combines an elegant and stylish appearance with high power. The car has a distinctly sporty character, and excellent dynamics, and behaves confidently on city streets, intercity highways, and country roads. By folding the rear row of seats, you can significantly increase the trunk space, but due to the features of the cross-coupe body, it isn't easy to place large-sized cargo in it.
Used BMW X4s have several trims, including the xDrive30i, M40i, and M, and two engine options:
- 2-liter turbocharged inline-4, 255 hp and 295 lb-ft;
- 3-liter turbocharged inline-6, 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.
BMW X5: versatile SUV for all needs

The X5 is the ancestor of the Bavarian crossover line. The mid-size BMW X5 is versatile, suitable for city trips and long journeys, and copes well with off-road conditions, except for soggy loam and black soil.
The BMW X5 offers a choice of a 3.0L inline 6-cylinder engine, a 4.4L V8 engine, or a hybrid option that combines a 6-cylinder engine with an electric motor. The most powerful variant is the X5 M.
BMW X6: full-size BMW X Series

The full-size BMW X6 is in many ways similar to the X4 but differs primarily in a larger and more athletic body, power, technology, and, of course, cost. With the Pure Extravagance package, the car acquires even more lavish extravagance and functionality.
The BMW X6 is powered by TwinPower Turbo engines. The X6 xDrive40i features an inline 6-cylinder engine, while the M60i boasts a V8 motor, both equipped with 48V mild-hybrid technology. Additionally, it comes with an 8-speed Sport Automatic Transmission. The BMW crossover offers several chassis packages, including Dynamic, Comfort, and Adaptive M.
It is difficult to call this model an SUV, but if necessary and the driver has sufficient experience, it can cope with difficult road conditions.
BMW X7: flagship BMW SUV

The full-size flagship crossover BMW X7 is a full-fledged SUV that can handle even hard road tests. Of course, you shouldn't drive it on arable land, but, in general, the model successfully copes with off-road conditions. The seven-seater interior and impressive trunk allow you to classify this auto as a family car.
In the United States, pre-owned BMW X7s come with a range of engine options:
- xDrive40i: This model features a turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine that delivers 375 hp, utilized in the 2018–2022 xDrive40i variants.
- xDrive50i: Equipped with a turbocharged V8 engine, this option was available in the 2018–2020 xDrive50i models.
- M50i: This BMW 7 boasts a turbocharged engine and was offered in the 2019–2022 M50i variants.
The 2021 and 2022 models incorporate the latest technology updates. Notably, the 2021 model is considered a great bargain, providing similar features to the 2024 model but at a more affordable price point.
How to choose between X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7?
Each BMW X series has unique features that are worth attention. The BMW X1 is the cheapest option. The X2 is the best choice for young people who want a hybrid of a crossover and a racing car. Connoisseurs of classics should test drive the X3 or X5. If you want a large and emphatically elegant car, choose the X4 or X6. Well, the X7 is an ideal choice for a large family and lovers of active recreation.
