Everything You Want to Know About the Indy Auto Man Mural Painting

Many have asked about the mural/painting project at the service location, so we wanted to answer the 3 commonly asked questions:

1. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

We believe in investing in our employees as well as in our community .  Installing public art in a community brings that community together, invites a safer and more vibrant neighborhood, and has positive economic impact for both our business and the surrounding area.  To highlight the best art of Indy, we along with Hue Murals created Indy Arts Fest to bring exposure and paid opportunities to 50+ local artists.

2. WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE DESIGN?

  1. Mechanical accents are included as a nod to what we do best – cars – without literally putting cars on the building, which would warrant special permitting for advertising. Gears, fuel gauges, shifter patterns, engine schematics, and a pinup girl changing a tire will all be included.
  2. Heroes and legends that represent our values are in the design – Freddy Mercury, MLK, Zeus, etc.
  3. Our core values are symbolically represented in the design – resourcefulness (represented figuratively in Zues’ “gears turning” e.g. Zeus has gears and mechanisms merging into his brain), growth (represented by the mechanical butterfly in transformation), and initiative (represented by the cosmic man.)

3. WHAT DOES THE PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

  1. Spraying large blocks of color with a sprayer: DONE. This will look a little wonky but is important for proper maintenance and paint adhesion.  This is not representative of the final product. This will look like a prism of colors, but will mostly get covered up in further stages. NOTE: The finished design WILL NOT look like a rainbow, but this preparatory stage does.
  2. Drawing the design on top of those color blocks: UP NEXT. This stage will look like black outlines on top of the sprayed colorful background.  This will happen largely at night next week.
  3. Painting in sections: FINAL STEP. Over the course of the next month, watch the mural come to life! The front entrance wall will be done by Labor Day to kick off the Indy Arts Fest!
