The reasons are straightforward: The United States is one of the world’s largest and most profitable automotive markets, especially for pickup trucks and crossovers. Important assembly disclaimer
Vehicle production locations can vary by model year, trim level, powertrain, and assembly run. Some models are produced in multiple countries, meaning that one version may be assembled in the United States while another is built in Canada, Mexico, or elsewhere.
A vehicle assembled in the United States may still contain parts manufactured in other countries because modern vehicles rely on international supply chains.
Why automakers build vehicles in America
The U.S. market remains particularly important for pickup trucks, SUVs, and crossovers. These vehicle categories continue to represent a major share of consumer demand, encouraging automakers to manufacture more models locally.
U.S. assembly provides several advantages:

The biggest new trend in the US is the expansion of electric-vehicle manufacturing. Automakers have invested heavily in EV plants and battery facilities. Reasonably, the businesses set plant locations close to the main auto market. It was a smart move, as the fast-changing consumer demand has encouraged many companies to add hybrid production as well. Several US auto factories originally designed for electric vehicles are now being reconfigured to produce hybrid models.
The broader global market is also under the influence of these trends. European automakers face intense competition from Chinese manufacturers. Some automakers are reducing or restructuring production in Europe, while the U.S. remains an important target market for their cars and SUVs.

BMW: $1.7 Billion in South Carolina
BMW has completed a major investment program in South Carolina. The company expanded its Spartanburg plant, which is BMW’s largest production facility worldwide, and built a new plant in nearby Woodruff. Together, these plants form an important center for BMW electric-vehicle and battery production.
BMW’s first electric vehicle assembled in the United States is expected to be the BMW iX5, with production scheduled to late 2026. The X5 will be produced locally with five powertrains, ranging from gasoline power to a fully electric version. By 2030, BMW expects to assemble at least six all-electric models in the United States.
The United States also serves as a major export hub for BMW vehicles. The Spartanburg plant produced 412,799 BMW X models in 2025, marking the seventh year in which annual production exceeded 400,000 vehicles. Approximately half of the autos assembled there were exported to nearly 120 countries.
Stellantis: A $70 billion plan to restore profitability in North America
Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler, has announced a five-year recovery plan extending through 2030. The plan carries a projected budget of approximately $70 billion, with about 70% of the investment directed toward Jeep, Ram, Peugeot and Fiat.
The company’s primary objective is to restore profitability in North America. Stellantis recorded approximately $2 billion in losses in the region during 2025, increasing pressure to strengthen its North American product lineup.
Ram brand is central to that recovery strategy. By 2030, Stellantis plans to introduce three new Ram pickups, including a compact pickup based on the South American Ram Rampage and a midsize pickup. The first new models could arrive as early as 2028, while Ram is expected to become Stellantis’ best-selling brand in the region by 2030.
Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge are also promising 11 new models by the end of the decade. Chrysler manufacturing facilities, which currently focus on minivans, are expected to expand and produce the vehicles to conquer the USA crossover segment with three new models.
Hyundai Motor Group: Restructuring its new Georgia plant
Hyundai Motor Group is adapting its new American manufacturing facilities to reflect changing demand. The HMGMA plant in Georgia, USA, was originally developed as an electric-vehicle facility, but it was also designed to transition quickly to hybrid production.
The plant has begun serial production of the Kia Sportage Hybrid, making it the first hybrid and the first Kia vehicle produced in Georgia, USA.
This transition is a direct response to strong U.S. demand for hybrids and the potential cost advantages of local assembly. Hyundai and Kia hybrid sales increased sharply during the first quarter of 2026, rising 55% and 51%, respectively.
The shift also illustrates a broader industry trend. Automakers are continuing to invest in EVs, but many are simultaneously expanding hybrid production because hybrids appeal to shoppers who want improved fuel economy without making the complete transition to battery-electric vehicles.
Find the right U.S.-assembled vehicle in Indiana
A vehicle’s brand badge does not always tell you where it was built. Several foreign-owned automakers assemble vehicles in the United States, while some models from traditionally American brands are produced in Canada, Mexico, or overseas.
