GMC is planning a major refresh for 2025. Following the launch of the next-generation Acadia in 2024, the smallest SUV in the lineup, the Terrain, will also receive a complete redesign for 2025. GMC is also preparing a refresh for its largest SUV, the full-size Yukon. Today, the experts of the Indy Auto Man GMC dealership in Indianapolis prepared an overview of the novelties.
The current GMC Terrain has been quietly holding its place in the lineup since 2018. Despite a delayed 2022 facelift and its venerable age, the Terrain remains the GMC best-selling SUV through the first half of 2024. Now, the company has unveiled a new model that it positions as the next generation of its entry-level compact SUV.
The first thing to notice about the 2025 GMC Terrain is its all-new exterior design. While the general cues are reminiscent of the previous version, for example, the C-shaped LED running lights up front and the upward slant toward the beltline on the C-pillar, there are also noticeable differences. The new model has a forward rake toward the C-pillar, similar to its Chevrolet Equinox sibling. The front end is completely redesigned, with a larger, more angular grille and sharper edges.
The rear has undergone modifications as well, showcasing straighter lines in the lower fascia, which now includes vertically oriented reflectors. The taillights have been downsized, and the previously small rear window has been replaced with larger ones. A new two-tone exterior color scheme, accentuated by a floating roof effect, has been achieved through the redesigned C-pillar.
Inside, the changes are even more radical. A 15-inch portrait-oriented digital display takes center stage on the dashboard, complemented by an 11-inch virtual instrument cluster. These are standard elements of the Terrain lineup, indicating a significant update to the tech options, including 15 electronic assistants for the driver.
The GMC Terrain package now includes:
In terms of engines, the 2025 Terrain has not changed much. The only engine option remains a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 175 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque. That’s the same as the current Terrain, but the old engine is connected to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2025 Terrain has standard all-wheel drive, and a FWD model will be launched later.
The 2025 GMC Terrain looks slightly taller and wider but the company hasn’t shared details regarding dimensions or changes to the chassis. First up is the entry-level Elevation trim, which will replace the SLE and SLT and arrive in dealerships in late 2024. The AT4 and Denali will arrive next year as 2026 models, offering more off-road and trim upgrades, respectively.
The 2025 GMC Terrain is more of an evolution than a revolution. It retains familiar cues but can boast significant improvements in design, technology, and functionality. Standard all-wheel drive is a nice bonus that will undoubtedly appeal to buyers who value confidence on the road in all conditions. However, the lack of engine choices and expected price increases may scare off some potential customers. Overall, the new Terrain looks promising and is poised to take its place in the competitive compact SUV market.
The updates for the Yukon will be more subtle compared to the previous generation. The SUV will receive redesigned headlights with a prominent lower section for the main lights and an LED eyebrow at the top. Although the taillights will keep their shape, they will feature a new graphic design that is connected by a rectangular trim.
Photos of the 2025 Yukon also showcase the AT4 variant, which features a bold blacked-out hexagonal grille. The lower chrome trim includes two red tow hooks, complemented by a skid plate. The Yukon AT4 appears to be equipped with Goodyear Wrangler Territory 275/60R-20 tires.
No significant changes are expected in the engine lineup; the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8 engines are likely to remain the same. However, the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six diesel engine may receive a power increase to 305 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque, similar to the updates seen in the 2025 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban. A full reveal for the Yukon should also be coming soon.
