Audi structures its model lineup using a letter-plus-number naming convention:
- A: Sedans and wagons (A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8)

- S: Sport-tuned versions (S3, S4, S5, S6, S7, SQ5, SQ7, SQ8)

Quattro: what it means and why it’s used
Quattro is Audi’s proprietary all-wheel-drive system. The word "quattro" is Italian for "four," referring to the four driven wheels. Unlike part-time systems (which operate in front-wheel-drive mode most of the time), classic Quattro is a permanent system: torque is always distributed among all four wheels.
There are several versions of Quattro depending on the model:
- Torsen-based (mechanical) Quattro: Permanent AWD with a mechanical center differential. Found on longitudinal-engine models like A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7, and most S/RS variants. Default torque split is often 40:60 front/rear, giving a rear-biased feel.
- Quattro ultra: A fuel-saving system that can disconnect the rear axle and run in front-wheel drive during light-load cruising, then re-engage AWD in under half a second when needed. Used on some A4, A5, A6 (non-S), and Q5 trims. Not used on S/RS models.
- Haldex-based (multi-plate clutch) Quattro: On transverse-engine platforms like A3, Q3, TT, and their S/RS versions (S3, RS3, TTS, TT RS). Normally front-wheel drive, sending torque rearward only when slip is detected or predicted.
So when you’re shopping used, the platform matters: a Q5 or A4 may have Torsen or ultra depending on year/trim, while an A3/Q3 will be Haldex-style.
S Line, S3, RS3 - what the letters mean
One common source of confusion when choosing an Audi involves the letters placed before or after the model name.
- S Line: A cosmetic and handling package, not a performance model. Includes sportier bumpers, wheels, steering wheel, seats, and sometimes a sport suspension but the engine remains the standard A-model unit. You’ll see “S Line” on A4, A5, Q5, Q7, Q8, etc.
- S models (S3, S4, S5, S6, S7, SQ5, SQ7, SQ8): True performance variants from Audi Sport. Expect upgraded engines (often turbo V6 or high-output four-cylinders), sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and chassis tweaks. Power typically lands in the 340-450 hp range depending on model.
- RS models (RS3, RS4, RS5, RS6, RS7, RS Q8): Top-tier “RennSport” performance cars, engineered for near-track capability with daily usability. These feature bespoke engines (e.g., 2.5L five-cylinder in RS3, 4.0L twin-turbo V8 in RS6/RS7/RS Q8), wider bodies, RS-specific suspension, and power often exceeding 440-600 hp

What do the numbers 40, 45, and 55 in Audi model names mean?
Since 2017, Audi has implemented a new power-based naming system: "35" corresponds to approximately 150 hp, "40" to around 190–204 hp, "45" to about 245–265 hp, and "55" to around 335–340 hp.
These numbers do not indicate engine displacement; for instance, the Q7 45 TFSI and Q7 55 TFSI both feature a 3.0-liter V6 engine, simply with different tuning. This naming system applies to all models, such as the A4 40 TFSI, Q5 45 TFSI, Q8 55 TFSI, and so on.
